Each volume of this series of companions to major philosophers
contains specially commissioned essays by an international
team of scholars, together with a substantial bibliography,
and will serve as a reference work for students and non-specialists. One aim of the series is to dispel the intimidation such
readers often feel when faced with the work of a difficult and
challenging thinker.
Boethius (c.480–c.525/6), though a Christian, worked in the
tradition of the Neoplatonic schools, with their strong interest
in Aristotelian logic and Platonic metaphysics. He is best
known for hisConsolation of Philosophy, which he wrote in
prison while awaiting execution, and which was a favourite
source for medieval philosophers and poets like Dante and
Chaucer. His works also include a long series of logical translations, commentaries and monographs and some short but
densely argued theological treatises, all of which were enormously influential on medieval thought. But Boethius was

If you knew any of us from another time or place, in a different context,
you may well not fully recognize the positions we take here. This collective project has changed us for now or for good, for better or worse, in all
kinds of ways. Even our voices sound different. By some strange ventriloquism, we opened our mouths and heard one of the others speaking
(or at least ran our fingers across the keyboard and read someone else’s
phrasing on the screen).
Of course, none of this happened instantly. Although consensus was
intended from the start, it sometimes required a few back-and-forth
exchanges to arrive. And even then it didn’t always seem stable. Like
emotions, opinions, judgments, and explanations adjust, and adjust to,
the unfolding social relations that surround them.
To start at the beginning (or at least one version of it), Agneta and Tony
convened a symposium on social aspects of emotion at the 1999 conference of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology in

Volume aims and editorial reflections
This collection of original, commissioned essays provides an assessment of the scope and
content of environmental sociology both in disciplinary terms and in terms of its wider
interdisciplinary contribution, refl ecting work by anthropologists, historians, geogra
phers, ecological economists, philosophers and political scientists, as well as dedicated
environmental sociologists. More than a decade has passed since the fi rst edition of
this handbook was published to considerable acclaim, and environmental sociology is
now fi rmly established as a critical social science discipline, as well as a very broad and
inclusive fi eld of intellectual endeavour. Our goal in producing a completely new edition
is to mark some of the changes, as well as the continuities, in the fi eld of environmental
sociology and to include chapters that draw attention to the substantive concerns and
theoretical debates of today.

Introduction
In recent years there has been ongoing, at times heated, debate in economic
geography as to how best to conceptualise and theorise economies and their
geographies. During the 1970s and 1980s, stimulated by the critique of spatial
science and views of the space-economy that drew heavily on neo-classical
economics, strands of heterodox political-economy approaches in general and
Marxian political economy in particular rose to prominence. These were important in introducing concerns with issues of evolution, institutions and the state,
alongside those of agency and structure, in developing more powerful and nuanced
understandings of economies and their geographies. Much of the subsequent
debate in the 1990s was informed by post-structural critiques of such politicaleconomy approaches, especially those that were seen (rightly or wrongly) to rely
upon an overly deterministic and structural reading of the economy and its
geographies (R. Hudson, 2001). These have been important i

Foreword: Space as Mechanism
Spatial cognition has long been a central topic of study in cognitive science. Researchers have asked how space is perceived, represented, processed, and talked about, all in an effort to understand how spatial cognition
itself works. But there is another reason to ask about the relations among
space, cognition, and language. There is mounting evidence that cognition
is deeply embodied, built in a physical world and retaining the signature of
that physical world in many fundamental processes. The physical world is a
spatial world. Thus, there is not only thinking aboutspace, but also thinkingthroughspace—using space to index memories, selectively attend to, and
ground word meanings that are not explicitly about space. These two aspects
of space—as content and as medium—have emerged as separate areas of
research and discourse. However, there is much to be gained by considering the interplay between them, particularly how the state of the art in each

A jumble of icebergs forms in front of the heavily crevassed
calving front of Jakobshavn Isbræ, one of the fastest outlet
glaciers draining the Greenland Ice Sheet. The ~5-kilometer-wide
ice front rises ~80 meters out of the water and extends more
than 600 meters underwater. Recent research shows that the
speeds of Greenland glaciers are increasing. See page 576
