Present study reports the length-weight relationship, condition factor and relative condition factor of Channa aurantimaculata (Musikasinthorn, 2000), a hole dwelling snakehead endemic fish species (Goswami et al., 2006, Vishwanath and Geetakumari, 2009) of a riparian wetland habitat of Dhemaji district, Assam. Length-weight relationship, condition factor and relative condition factor of the species was evaluated during the feeding cycle (December - March/April) in the year November 2008 to October 2009. The relative growth coefficient (b) values for male was found to be 4.18 and for female was 2.65, the condition factor (K) value was 1.29 ± 0.27 for male and 1.66 ± 0.28 for female, relative condition factor (Kn) value 1.05 ± 0.42 in male and 1.00 ± 0.40 in female were observed. The coefficient of correlation (r ) in both the sexes exhibit allometric growth (negative in female and highly positive in male).

Odonata diversity in vegetable fields (brinjal and okra) and rice fields was studied from January 2005 to December 2008 in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. Totally 23 species of Anisoptera (dragonflies) and 12 species of Zygoptera (damselflies) were recorded and all these species were grouped into eight families. In vegetable fields 31 species of dragonflies and damselflies were recorded under 22 genera. In rice fields the species richness (21 species) and total genera (16) were less than vegetable fields during the entire study period. Libellulidae was the large family in both vegetable and rice fields which comprised maximum number of species. Pantala flavescens (Fabricius), a migratory species, was the most dominant in numbers throughout the year. Diversity indices clearly showed that odonata diversity was higher in vegetable fields than in rice fields.

Birds present everywhere and are important ecological indicators. The study area Tenkasi (8.97°N 77.3°E) and Ambasumudram (8.7°N 77.47°E) region of Tirunelveli district, Tamilnadu state is at the foothills of Southern Western Ghats. Studies on distribution of birds in this part have been recorded from the yester years but due to various reasons it had been confine towards aquatic ecosystem. To fulfill this lacuna, present study was carried out. A total of 100 species of land birds were documented that belongs to 36 orders and 48 families. Study on nesting pattern, breeding pattern was also carried out. 30% of the birds had their breeding periods during rainy season and 50% of the birds had their breeding periods during harvesting time. Insectivores breeds during rainy season and granivores breeds during harvest season which supports ‘food availability-breeding time’ hypothesis.

Butterflies were enumerated during February 2010 to January 2012 using pollard walk method to assess the species diversity in the tropical thorn dry deciduous (Deccan Plateau) scrub jungle with granite boulder outcrop habitats of Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Bellary District, Karnataka. This area, a total of 5,587.30 hectares is being proposed for the conservation of threatened species of Indian subcontinent the Sloth bear, Melursus ursinus and announded as a Sanctuary. A total of 41 butterfly species belonging to Hesperiidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae families were recorded. Two species of butterflies recorded from this region have a protected status under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Habitat destruction in terms of mining activity can be a potential threat to this area and is suggested to be the reason for the reduction of species richness and abundance of butterflies in impacted areas of the study site.

A study was conducted in a flood plain wetland (Kapla) of Barpeta district, Assam from September, 2013 to May, 2014 to evaluate the present status and major threats to aquatic avifaunal diversity in the wetland. Periodic surveys were conducted in and around the wetland by walking on fixed path in the early morning from 5.30 am to 9.00 am. To locate and identify the distant birds, binocular (10X15) was used and photographs were taken with the aid of digital camera. Water birds were identified with the help of different field guides. The present status and IUCN status of all the birds were enumerated. A total of 30 water bird species under 14 families were observed in the wetland. As per IUCN status, 26 bird species are placed in Least Concern (LC), three species in Near Threatened (NT) and one species in the Vulnerable (VU) category. The observation also revealed 16 bird species as common (Cm), six species as Rare (Rr), five species as Lesser in number (Ln), two species as Irregular vis
